How a couples session flows

Most couples sessions are around an hour, sometimes extending a little if we move between two nearby locations. We’ll begin with a short chat, then ease into simpler movements and prompts — walking, turning towards or away from each other, pausing in good light — before exploring slightly more composed frames once you’re comfortable. Throughout, I’ll give clear, gentle direction when helpful and step back whenever things are unfolding naturally.

Ahead of time, we’ll talk about time of day (early or later in the day often works best), outfit ideas and any weather back-up plans if we’re outdoors. You don’t need a full wardrobe plan; usually one main look — plus a coat or jacket if it’s cooler — is enough. If the forecast is truly unworkable, we can discuss rescheduling or adapting the plan (for example, leaning more on covered locations or at-home/hotel options) so the session still feels like you.

A couples session is a chance to pause together, away from the logistics of a wedding day. These sessions are unhurried and lightly guided: I’ll suggest simple movements and directions, then step back so you can settle into each other and forget about the camera. The goal is to create images that feel refined and composed, but still unmistakably the two of you — not a set of poses that could belong to anyone.

Your photographs can be used for save-the-dates, invitations and wedding websites, or simply as something personal to keep at home. We choose locations that match your lives and taste — London streets, town hall surroundings, parks, riverside walks, favourite neighbourhoods, hotels or at-home sessions — and work with the light and season on the day.

FAQs

  • The best locations are the ones that feel connected to your lives: the neighbourhood where you live, a favourite park or riverside walk, the streets around your town hall or wedding venue, or a hotel or at-home session if you prefer privacy. We’ll choose one or two areas that suit your taste — anything from quiet mews and galleries to Marylebone streets or the South Bank — and plan a simple route so we’re spending the time making photographs, not travelling. The aim is for the city to feel like a natural backdrop to the two of you, not the main subject.

  • Most sessions last around 60–90 minutes, depending on locations and how much we move around. That usually gives us time to settle in, explore one or two areas and build a varied, coherent set of images without feeling rushed or exhausted.

  • In London, early morning and the last light of the day are usually the most flattering: streets are quieter, the sun is softer and there’s more room for you to relax. Seasonally, spring blossom, long summer evenings and soft autumn light all work beautifully; winter sessions can be atmospheric too, especially around hotels, rooftops or at-home settings. When you enquire, we’ll look at your chosen locations and suggest a time and date that balances light, weather and your schedule so the session feels calm rather than rushed.

  • Choose outfits that feel like a slightly polished version of how you’d naturally dress to go out together — nothing that needs too much adjusting or feels like costume. Solid or softly textured fabrics often photograph more elegantly than very bold patterns, and it’s helpful if your tones sit comfortably together rather than matching exactly. I’m always happy to give thoughts on options once you’ve booked.

  • Light rain can sometimes add atmosphere, especially in the city, but heavy rain or strong wind can make everything less enjoyable. If the forecast looks difficult, we’ll discuss options: moving the time, changing to a more sheltered route, or rescheduling where possible. Flexibility does depend on diary and travel commitments, but I’ll always be honest about what’s realistic.

  • Yes, within reason. Many London sessions naturally combine, for example, a park and nearby streets, or a town hall area and a short walk towards a favourite café or square. The key is to keep locations close enough that we’re not spending most of the session in transit; I’ll help you shape a route that gives variety without fragmenting the time.

  • Absolutely. Once your gallery is ready, you’re welcome to use the images for personal print and web use related to your celebrations — from save-the-dates and invitations to your wedding website and framed prints at home. If you’re working with a designer or planner, I’m happy to liaise on formats if needed.
